The Regal Theatre

Light Application were very proud to be approached by the electrical and lighting design consultants ETC to provide an LED Lighting and Control solution for the extensive refurbishment of the Heritage listed Regal Theatre in Subiaco – Western Australia.

The brief was to supply retrofit LED lighting integrated into the existing Heritage fixtures, and to add additional recessed LED lighting to bring this unique venue up to modern day standards, whilst keeping the all-important historical look to the Theatre.  It was necessary to keep the step-less dimming capability and colour temperature of original incandescent filament lights used in the past, whilst improving the Colour Rendering to a high CRI98+. The second part was to provide a complete, easy to use functional lighting control system for the Theatre House Lighting, which was to be manually controlled via pre-set lighting scenes as well as integrate with existing DMX512 Theatre Lighting desk.  The third part was to provide Lighting Control for new LED Isle lighting and LED for walkway areas.

An additional upgrade to the project was to enhance the look of the existing Art Deco sound grills on either side of stage, by adding an RGBW LED Solution to enhance the beauty of existing build. All of this was within the tight 12 week turnaround of the significant internal renovation.

Space Cannon fixtures were chosen for the Heritage ceiling, so that we could achieve the absolute fine granularity dimming of 0-100% to exactly replicate the original incandescent theatre dimming capability. A Helvar control system was provided to enable the seamless manual and DMX512 integration, along with Philips Color Kinetics Colour Graze fixtures to light up the Art Deco sound grills. The project was a complete success and is a great example of matching the right LED with the correct Control system, so that in combination even the most stringent dimming requirements can be met.
