"Colour Fields" Artwork at Moora Residential College

The common area at the Moora College boarding residence is separated by two louvre walls.

The walls allow for students to enjoy the outdoors whilst maintaining privacy. Artists Tony Jones and Angela McHarrie carefully selected the finish colour of each powder coated louvre to represent a scene from the local area and approached us for suggestions on how to integrate lighting.

Our team worked alongside art consultant Jenny Beahan, and Tony and Angela, to come up with the perfect lighting solution. The team landed on an arrangement of pureLED Flexi Addressable RGB LED strips that worked with the theme of the artwork and also offered an economical solution, limiting the number of LED strips to fit ‘just right’ within the channel capacity of the cost effective Color Kinetics iPlayer 3 DMX controller. A quick mock-up to show a visual representation of the resulting lighting effect had Tony and Angela immediately sold on the idea.

We co-ordinated with the louvre manufacturer MBR Metals to install the pureLED Flexi Addressable strips into the underside of each aluminium extrusion to be illuminated. The strips were ordered from factory with waterproof connectors so that the installation would be plug and play. The only terminations required were into the pureLED Chameleon installed at the end of each wall. This is the first project we have worked on with Tony and Angela and they are extremely pleased with the result… as are we!

It was a pleasure to work with Ben and Light Application on our artwork for Moora Residential College. Their capacity to give life to our concept was crucial to the development of our project and their ongoing support and advice was a key factor in the success of the artwork.
